Updates, Announcements and Feedback
CiteDesk can tell you when there is a new version or a new announcement, and lets you send us your comments. The Help menu has Check for Updates…, Announcements and Feedback….
Checking for Updates
CiteDesk asks the website for the latest version for this computer (operating system and processor architecture) and compares it with the version you have. When there is a newer one, a notification appears in the writing window; Go to Download opens the download page on the website. CiteDesk never downloads or installs a new version by itself. You do that yourself.
- Automatic checks: at every startup and once a day after that. A given new version is announced only once. Settings > Advanced > Miscellaneous has Automatically check for app updates; when it is off, CiteDesk goes online only when you choose Help > Check for Updates….
- What is sent: this computer's operating system, processor architecture and the interface language. No account, reference or document data is sent.
- If no version has been released for this computer yet, Check for Updates… says so.
Announcements
Announcements are notices we publish, such as known issues, maintenance schedules and new features. When there are announcements you have not seen, a banner appears at the top of the writing window; View Announcements opens the list, and the close button on the banner marks them as seen. Help > Announcements opens the list at any time, and the ones you have not seen are marked New. Announcements appear in the interface language and are plain text. When Automatically check for app updates is off, announcements are loaded only when you open the list.
Feedback
Help > Feedback… opens the feedback window. Describe the problem or suggestion and choose Send.
- Anonymous: feedback does not include your account, so we cannot contact you through it. If you would like to be contacted, include your contact details in the text.
- Diagnostic summary: if you select Attach a diagnostic summary, the items listed in the window are sent with the feedback: the app version, the system, the sync state, the number of items waiting to upload and download, and fixed problem codes. It contains no references, file names, paths or account information. If you do not select it, nothing is attached.
- Length: the text can be at most 6000 characters, and the whole request at most 16 KiB. A Chinese character takes three bytes, so long text reaches the byte limit first; the window tells you and Send is unavailable.
- If sending fails: the window stays open with your text, and the notification says what to do. Sending too many messages in a short time is also refused for a while.
