Terms of service

Draft This page is a draft and may change.

This page explains the basic arrangements for using CiteDesk and the services we operate. CiteDesk is not affiliated with Zotero.

Nature of this page

  • This page describes the basic arrangements for using CiteDesk and the services we operate as they stand now, and may change as the service changes.

Closed beta with data resets

  • This is the team's internal closed beta with data resets, not a public release. Data in the official services may be wiped and rebuilt, and the services may be interrupted, changed or stopped at any time.
  • Service changes may make older data unusable and require it to be recreated.
  • Keep your own copy of anything important. The app can export a library backup and export references, and your documents are already Markdown files in your workspace.
  • There is no service-level commitment and no guaranteed uptime.

Account

  • The account is yours. Keep your password, authenticator and backup codes safe; actions taken under the account count as your own.
  • Do not register under someone else's identity, and do not share an account.
  • You can delete your account in the User Center at any time.

Your content

  • The documents you write and the references, notes and attachments you import are yours. We claim no rights in them and will not use them to display or promote anything.
  • The sync service only keeps and passes on this data for you. In an end-to-end encrypted space the server cannot read the content, so you keep the recovery code. If you lose it and have no other authorized device, the data cannot be recovered, and we cannot recover it for you.
  • You are responsible for having the right to use the content you put in, including attachments you download from elsewhere.

Acceptable use

Please do not:

  • attack, probe or work around the limits and authentication of the service, or try to read anyone else's data;
  • register accounts or send requests in bulk by automated means, or use the service to send spam;
  • upload unlawful content, or use the service to infringe others' rights.

The operator sets limits on usage, request rates and storage, and may change them. If you break these arrangements or endanger the service or others, the operator may restrict or suspend the account.

Software license

The CiteDesk desktop app is released under AGPL-3.0-or-later. You may use, modify and redistribute the desktop app under that license. The full license text, and the licenses and notices of the third-party components that ship with the app, are on the license and credits page.

Relationship with third parties

  • CiteDesk is not affiliated with Zotero and does not speak for it. The app reuses Zotero's open-source components, and when you use the matching features it contacts Zotero's style, translator and retraction-list services. Those services are provided by Zotero, and their availability and rules are theirs.
  • The app also contacts other services such as OpenAlex, Unpaywall and the publisher sites you visit. Each has its own terms.
  • See the privacy notice for details of data transmission and processing.

Disclaimer

  • The beta is provided as is, with no guarantee that it is uninterrupted, error-free, or that data will not be lost.
  • Citation styles and bibliographies are laid out by citeproc with CSL styles. Check the result against the requirements of your journal or school yourself.
  • Liability that the law does not allow to be excluded is not excluded.

Ending and changes

You can stop using the service and delete your account at any time. The operator may end the service if these arrangements are broken, or because the service is changed or stopped. This page changes as the service changes; continuing to use the service after a change means you are aware of it.

Governing law and contact

This page and the service are governed by the laws of the Republic of Korea. If you have a question, write to contact@mail.citedesk.app.
